Five Reasons I Became an Avon Rep

I decided it was time for a new side hustle. For years I have considered signing up to be a consultant for several MLM (Multi-level Marketing) companies, but I always had trouble deciding which one. Avon was always a top contender for various reasons. I decided to lean in and go for it. I signed up and purchased my starter kit. I have been slowly educating myself on best practices.

Here are the reasons I chose Avon over hundreds of other companies.

1. The products are affordable.
We are a two income family, but we are still pretty frugal. I am skeptical to purchase some of the other MLM products such as Shakeology and Rodan + Fields because they are expensive. (I’m not putting those companies down.  I’m sure their products are great.) Some people are frugal like me and don’t want to pay that much for health and beauty products. There are some people who tend to splurge on these products, but there are also people out there who don’t make a lot of money and can’t afford those high-end products. Avon is affordable for people of all income levels. This is important to me.

2. The startup kits are affordable.
Avon offers three different levels of starter kits. The first is $25, the second is $50 and the third is $100. This means that lower income people wanting to start a business can afford the starter kit. They don’t have to break the bank to do this with Avon.

Some of the other MLM companies charge hundreds of dollars for their starter kits. As a frugal person, it would make me feel uncomfortable to invest that much money when I am just starting out with a new business.

3. I genuinely like the products.
I remember trying the products as a kid and ordering them as an adult. They offer beauty products, hair products, clothing, shoes, home goods and health products. I love the Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil (one of Avon’s most popular products). It has multiple uses such as removing makeup, repelling insects and keeping your skin baby soft. I also love the Anew Skincare Products.

4. Their commission structure is very competitive.
You can earn between 20% and 50% depending on how much you sell. This is higher than most of the other MLM companies. (Commission structure below does not include KickStart program for new reps.  You get a higher commission for the first six campaigns under the KickStart Program.)

5. They have been around for a long time.
Avon has been around for other 130 years. How many other MLM companies can say they have been around for that long? My late great-grandmother Karla sold Avon as a side hustle back in the day. She didn’t speak English, but found a way to make it work. My other late great-grandmother Slawka used the products back in the day as well!
